Corpus Christi SUCKS!…right?

If you’ve lived in Corpus Christi long enough, you’ve heard variations on the following comments:

  • There’s nothing to do in CC?
  • Everything here is sub par
  • Everything here sucks!

When you hear people that choose to live in a place speak so poorly of it, several follow up questions leap to mind:

  • Are these things true?
  • If they are true, why?
  • If they are not true, why would you say them?
  • If you hate where you live so much, why don’t you move?

Do you have any answers to these questions?

It was this back and forth imaginary dialogue that led to 40 Things to Do in Corpus Christi. Nothing to do? Let’s test this theory by purposefully doing 40 Things that we’ve never done before (or hadn’t done in a very long time) over the course of one year. Let’s go out and do a lot of things and then make conclusions on the drastic statements listed above.

With nothing to do, can we even find 40? (We did with hundreds left over; see the original list here).

Over the last two years we’ve formulated our answers to the questions above, but we’d like to hear yours.

Where is the Best Place to Go Kicker Dancing?

We’re looking for the best place to go Kicker Dancing! The poll opens on 12/1 and we’re still looking for places that should be on the poll. Look to the right and email us if someone should be on the list.

The criteria is that kicker dancing is the primary draw for the location. It must have a dedicated dance floor and primarily play country music.

Katia Uriarte Wins Best 10PM Anchorwoman

KIII’s Katia Uriarte Wins Best 10PM Anchorwoman

Several years ago, I did a story with Katia Uriarte about haunted houses in the area. She and I were on camera at several different haunted houses around town commenting on and ranking them.

That night I learned the power and influence of Katia Uriarte who, at the time, was still on the KIII morning show.

No matter where we went hordes of people, mostly women, flocked–FLOCKED–around her, many times in tears, as they explained how much they loved her and religiously watched the morning news.

I’m not sure that John Lennon, returned from the grave, could have illicited as rabid a public response.

It’s no surprise, then, that Katia Uriarte overwhelmingly wins our Best 10 PM Anchorwoman Golden Seagull. If you see her, say, ‘Congratulations!’ And try not to cry.

Congrats, Katia!

“Here we go again.

Every station it’s the same. Women ask me how I put up with it. Well, the truth is, I don’t really have a choice. This is definitely a man’s world. But while they’re laughing and grab-assing, I’m chasing down leads and practicing my nonregional diction. Because the only way to win is to be the best. The very best.”

Bart Bedsole Wins Best 10PM Anchorman

Bart Bedsole Wins Best 10PM Anchorman

There was a time, a time before cable. When the local anchorman reigned supreme. When people believed everything they heard on TV. This was an age when only men were allowed to read the news. And in Corpus Christi, one anchorman was more man then the rest. His name was Bart Bedsole. He was like a god walking amongst mere mortals. He had a voice that could make a wolverine purr and suits so fine they made Sinatra look like a hobo. In other words, Bart Bedsole was the balls.

Congratulations, Bart, for nabbing the first Golden Seagull custom crafted for a person: Best 10 PM Anchorman in Corpus Christi.

Best Pizza in CC Finals

Vote Now for Best LOCAL Pizza in town.

This is probably the best category to explain 40 Things’s locals only policy for Golden Seagull Awards. Already, people are wondering where Dominos, Pizza Hut, and Papa Murphy’s are on the poll.

There is no discounting a chain pizza. In other cities non-chain pizza joints also deliver. Here, they don’t (nor does anyone else…it’s a deficiency, but we’ll solve that some other time). So, if you want a pizza served up to your doorstep–a very valid and completely justifiable desire–then you gotta call a chain. I even have my favorite, Dominos.

But local pizza is a whole other animal. They don’t deliver, but they–if created correctly–move from convenient disc of cheese to delicious homemade meal. Why do we not put chains on our polls? Why if you participate to find the ‘BEST’ of a city are chains not even in the mix? It’s not an indictment of chains (although some would be indicted if you look close enough on this website). Rather, it’s a celebration of local flavor. If you can walk into a place of the same name in a different city and order the exact, identical, ingredients-come-from-the-same-distributor dish, then there’s just nothing local about it.

We found 16 places that toss a mean, local pie. We’re down to the top 3. Vote for your favorite to the right. The winner is the winner. Talk about some pie-flinging action!

HISTORY:

Top 40 Things #31: The SpokesPeople

We’re counting down The Top 40 Things to do in Corpus Christi. Click here to see the full list.

#31 is The SpokesPeople.

Corpus Christi–every city, actually–requires a constant injection of innovation. Cities north of us that get a lot of attention for being innovative simply do it–or talk about it–better or more often than we do.

When I find examples of innvoative, new things to do, they always get extra attention. The SpokesPeople are a “not so serious bicycle riding gang” that meet once a month to ride through a great area of town and stop from time to time to eat, drink and socialize. Aside from their big monthly ride, they also ride every other Wednesday. Their innovation, dedication and commitment to success has received my full attention.

Find out more at The SpokesPeople’s website.

I wrote a column about The SpokesPeople for the Corpus Christi Caller Times back on May 11, 2011.

Corpus Christi doesn’t have an idea deficiency. Ideas, or a lack of them, aren’t our problem. The missing ingredient — the critical ingredient — is the people who will take an exceptional idea to the street. Our city’s heroes are the relatively few people who move ‘Someone should,’ to ‘I’ll be that someone.’

Creating events isn’t hard. It requires four simple things: and idea, a few people to help, a little bit of planning and a little bit of magic. Sometimes it takes a little bit of money, but we won’t worry about that right now.

Every event you enjoy anywhere was simply planned by real people. The really great events become really great because they also have that little bit of magic. In Corpus Christi, folks that don’t understand how life works believe that great things to do grow out of the ground like pumpkins. “Why doesn’t Corpus Christi have more things?” people ask. The answer is simple. Because no PERSON (step two) PLANNED (step three) the thing (step one) that you feel should exist. Without those basics…no magic.

Even pumpkins require a farmer to plant a seed, fertilize and irrigate.

Several months ago, six friends had an idea: “What if we took our bicycles and rode around downtown stopping here and there to look around and grab a few drinks?” Not a bad idea. Sounds fun. Thankfully, the story doesn’t end there.

They actually did it, and they had so much fun they decided to do it a few weeks later, trying to introduce friends to their creative lunacy. Twenty people showed up. A few weeks later they did it again. Thirty people showed up. This brings us to a couple of weeks ago when they did it again.

And 50 people showed up.

It’s just that easy. Now, don’t think that I’m discounting the hard work and commitment of The SpokesPeople. Magic (like The SpokesPeople have created) requires hours of discussion (free), planning (free), marketing (doesn’t have to be that expensive), and commitment by many people to make sure that a minimum success, measured by attendance and fun, is acheived with every event. People, planning, a little bit of money, a dash of magic, and something magical is born.

Now, loosely organized, they call themselves The SpokesPeople (ingenious, no?) and have a simple motto: “No Spandex. No Naysaying.” Words to live by in a city known for naysayers.

Step one has been taken. A group of people took their great idea and made it happen. Step two is going out to take advantage of their hard work, and that is up to you.

Top 40 Things #36: Corpus Christi IceRays

We’re counting down The Top 40 Things to do in Corpus Christi. Click here to see the full list.

#36 is The Corpus Christi IceRays.

Block quoted below are excerpts from my September 28, 2010 Caller-Times column, IceRays game tops the list of things to do

When I decided to do 40 things I’ve never done in and around Corpus Christi in 2010, step one was creating my list. I did a lot of research; I asked friends for ideas. Items were added and deleted, the list constantly fine-tuned to take in the best (hopefully) of the Coastal Bend.

To this day, though, I remember the first activity I wrote down on that blank page back in early January: I would attend a Corpus Christi IceRays hockey game.

For years, I’ve had the best intentions. As an entertainment option, the IceRays seemed like a slam dunk: I constantly hear about the exciting, fun games; American Bank Center is a first-class arena to do just about anything; here is another home team to support and follow. I understand all of this, but the IceRays were pushed to the back burner again and again.

You see, I’m just not a hockey guy.

And neither, probably, are you if you grew up in Corpus Christi. My sports career began in fourth grade when I declared to my parents that I wanted to play youth football like my friend, Dale. Football, basketball and baseball — these are the Southern standards that our young ones cut their sports teeth on. My son played Little League so of course we’ll go to a Hooks game. Sure, I watch the Cowboys so the Hammerheads make sense.

Don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing wrong with hockey. I just don’t know it, and if I don’t know it, it can’t be that great. Right?

“When you head south of The Mason Dixon line, hockey becomes a real challenge,” said Pat Dunn, General Manager of the Corpus Christi IceRays. “We have to educate potential fans in a way you aren’t required to with football or baseball.”

After 13 years of action on the ice, the IceRays have done their job well, building a very loyal fan base.

“We have die-hard fans now,” Dunn said. “You come to a few games, learn the players’ names, understand the rules, and you’re hooked. Season ticket sales — the fans that come back year after year — are always phenomenal.”

Can thousands of die-hard IceRays fans be wrong? Of course not. I’ve been wrong, and this is the reason it was first on my list this year: I know I’m going to love it.

And love it, I did. And, what the hell? That was the whole column for you.
